Geology

Head of Department: Mr H N Veevers

William Hulme's Grammar School Geology department offers an excellent introduction to the science of geology through it's AS and A Level courses.  The department bhas been fortunate to receive the Geological Society award twice in the last  few years for the most outstanding geological examination results by an individual.  Many students go onto study geology at university and several are now employed in the industry.

Geology is the branch of science concerned with the structure, evolution and dynamics of the earth, and with the exploitation of the mineral and energy resources that the earth contains. Geology uses all the sciences to investigate the earth but also uses a distinctive scientific methodology involving internal and external earth processes to explore the evolution of the planet through geological time.

The study of rocks, minerals and fossils is not possible without studying rocks in the field. Field courses take place in Anglesey and Arran although courses have been run in the Alps.

Brief description of what is studied at:

L6th -  Foundation Geology, Field Course, coursework on fieldwork, Geological Hazards.

U6th - Rock forming processes - Coursework based on fieldwork and work in the laboratory;Natural Resouces Climate Change.
