Stretch and Challenge


The Gifted and Talented programme is one which is very much recognised and valued by staff and students within the school.  It encompasses firstly identifying able students and then provides differentiated support for these individuals in a variety of ways, including: in-class provision and external enrichment activities. The bedrock of this provision is delivered by departments through inclusive first teaching, which aims to stretch and challenge the most able pupils.

The Gifted and Talented Mission:

  • To provide a broad, balanced curriculum
  • To ensure that able pupils undertake activities and tasks that are stimulating for their ability
  • To monitor and support the performance of the Gifted and Talented cohort through data analysis and mentoring
  • To broaden the educational experiences of able students by introducing them to new ideas, concepts and subjects
  • To identify and raise the attainment of underachievers through mentoring
  • To encourage pupils to develop their higher order thinking skills and apply them to the subjects that they study
  • To broaden pupils’ social experiences by encouraging their participation in activities run by other schools and organisations
  • To broaden pupils’ ambitions and make them aware of the range of higher education and career options that are available to them
  • To raise the standard of attainment of able pupils at Key Stage 3, GCSE and A Level

What Does it Mean to be ‘Gifted’ or ‘Talented’?

The group is divided into:

·     Gifted - The academically most able students

·    Talented - Students whose expertise and/or talent is in areas such as sport, music, art and drama

Each individual department within the school has a record of the students they believe to be gifted or talented and aim to provide such students with a range of activities to help them develop their ability. Students will all be made aware of which department’s gifted and talented list they appear on.

The Identification of Students:

Several methods of identifying the cohort are currently used:

·         Primary school recommendations

·         SATs scores

·         Formal tests

·         Teacher recommendations

·         Parent recommendations

What Makes William Hulme’s Grammar School’s Gifted and Talented Provision Unique?


1.    Extensive departmental offer (see attached booklet - Departmental Statements)

2.    Wide range of enrichment opportunities

Students of all year groups are offered a variety of external enrichment activities to attend: for example, the Gateways Programme for Years 7 to 11 and the "Wise-Up Programme" for pupils in Year 10 through our partnership with the University of Manchester.

Some examples of enrichment activities are listed below:-

At Key Stage 3 the activities are largely aimed at exciting and inspiring students through alternative activities such as Photography courses, Forensic Science Discovery Days and Enterprise Days.

At Key Stage 4 (GCSE) the activities are intended to provide able students with an extended knowledge of the subjects they are skilled in.  Students will be invited to attend specialised University days, lectures and workshops. .

At Key Stage 5 (A-Level) activities are largely specialised and therefore arranged at a departmental level.  The activities offered may range from a specialised film viewing opportunity at the Cornerhouse cinema to a visit to Auschwitz.
