Y9 Languages Motivational Talk

Thursday, 16 January 2020

Last Thursday, 16 January, all our Year 9 students were invited to take part in a Languages Motivational Talk.

Two students from the University of Manchester, who are currently working and studying languages, delivered a talk about the importance of languages in the world today; not only to be chosen as a degree, but also how languages are essential for work and business.

Their presentation gave an insight into the different paths that can be taken with languages, both at the University of Manchester and for future careers/jobs. For example, in the social sciences, recruitment, leisure, academic and commercial business.

One of the speakers was a Student Ambassador who had spent the last year of his degree in Japan.  He explained how he got totally shocked by the culture over there and how his Japanese had improved considerably since living, studying and working over there.  He also highlighted the possibility of doing a "Combined Degree" of Business and Japanese and how it helped him to find his dream job in the social care business in Japan.

The other student spoke about the possibility of working in different places all over the world and the importance of being able to speak different languages, in order to access a very competitive pool of jobs in Europe.

At the end of the presentation, our students were invited to ask relevant questions. It was a really positive experience for them.
