Year 5 Meet Manchester Gorton MP, Mr Afzal Khan

Thursday, 3 December 2020

Year 5 were privileged to meet Manchester Gorton MP, Mr Afzal Khan this half-term.

We excitedly bombarded him with questions about his job, his life, and his interests. He was extremely generous with his time and we learned so many fascinating things about him.

We were lucky enough to discuss current issues with the very honest and forthcoming MP. He shared his views on how vulnerable adults and children need to be kept safe online, which acted as a 'hook' for children to write persuasive letters addressed to The House of Commons, imploring them to enforce laws on companies to carry out their duty of care towards users. He shared his thoughts on how climate change is a global issue which must be addressed. He advised the children on how they could become successful learners, contribute to society, and make our world a better place to live in.

The children were astounded when he told us about the different famous people he has met. The children were thrilled with their meeting with Mr Afzal Khan; they created and emailed a word cloud to Mr Afzal Khan to show what they thought about him.
