On Tuesday 15 December, a group of Year 11 students participated in “The Skills for Success” (Gateways Programme) online (via Microsoft Teams). The group participated in various activities with multiple schools.
The “Skills for Success” day focused on improving learners’ awareness of University life and the learning styles, through the completion of a group research enquiry into topical issues. The students were able to ask questions and developed good communication and group-work skills, learning from each other’s experience.
The students worked in pairs and completed worksheets sent by the University of Manchester. Students were set questions on many topics. These included:
- Teaching and Learning
- University Accommodation
- Sports and Leisure
Reflection was undertaken at each stage of the process; from working as a group, to evaluating the resources. The aim of the day was to develop reflective students who are aware of the process required to complete a task and able to identify areas for improvement in all University life.
The students thoroughly enjoyed the experience, commenting, “I really enjoyed the experience. I am sure that the knowledge and skills I have learnt and developed will help me with my GCSEs, as well as at College, and hopefully at University too”.
