We’re extremely delighted that the Bookbuzz books our Year 7 students have been so eagerly waiting arrived at WHGS, just in time for the Christmas holidays!
Bookbuzz is our annual reading programme for Year 7 that is launched during the Autumn Term and presents an opportunity for students to receive a free book as a welcome gift from the Learning Resource Centre.
Delivered by WHGS, in conjunction with our partners at BookTrust, the scheme aims to help schools inspire a love of reading in 11 to 13-year-olds. Participating schools give their students the chance to choose their own book to take home and keep from a list of 17 titles. The books are all carefully selected to ensure quality, suitability and inclusivity. Most importantly, they represent a diverse range of fiction and non-fiction titles that encourage reading for pleasure.
Students began selecting their books in November during their library lessons. They watched a short film produced by BookTrust which introduced the titles on the list and explained the scheme in greater detail. In previous years we have shared library copies of each title around the room to allow students to see the books and read the blurbs, giving them a better idea of what they would receive when their own copies arrive. This year, due to Covid-19 restrictions, although we were unable to share the books in quite the same way, we still wanted to ensure that students had plenty of information and gave each member of Year 7 their own Bookbuzz pack to accompany the BookTrust film.
And after a short wait, the books are here! We’ve been giving them out during library lessons over the past two weeks and many students have already received a copy of their chosen title and taken it home to share with parents and carers. If students have been absent from their recent library lesson due to a period of self-isolation or because they were participating in the Bikeability scheme, they will be presented with their Bookbuzz book as soon as we return after the Christmas break.
Quite a few of our Year 7 students struggled to decide upon just one title this year and were pleased to learn that they can borrow all of the Bookbuzz titles from the LRC.

Any books requested during the Christmas holidays will be made available for students when we return in January. We will also run a Bookbuzz book review House competition in the Spring Term.
Happy reading Year 7!
