A Whole School Approach
At WHGS, we recognise that the personal development of learners, spiritually, morally, socially and culturally, plays a significant part in their ability to learn and achieve. We therefore aim to provide an education that provides learners with opportunities to explore and develop their own values and beliefs, spiritual awareness, high standards of personal behaviour, a positive, caring attitude towards other people, an understanding of their social and cultural traditions and an appreciation of the diversity and richness of these cultures.
We are also committed to the promotion of British Values. SMSC education is inextricably linked to our ethos. We believe that each learner is valued as an individual and supported in developing intellectually, socially and emotionally within a caring, purposeful and flexible framework.

The Curriculum – Core and Extended
Through the core curriculum all subject areas can and do contribute to the development of SMSC in lessons. Key subjects, such as RS and PSHE by their subject matter make a particular contribution to SMSC development. In addition, through the extended curriculum opportunities such as 1:1 guidance interviews in Year 11 and the Gateways Programme in Years 7 to 11 pupils are encouraged to reflect on their achievements and effectively plan future pathways.
Assemblies – Extended Curriculum
Weekly year group assemblies allow SMSC values to be integrated into the extended curriculum. Assemblies where students celebrate the success of others such as the end of term awards make an important contribution to the SMSC values and promote a culture of celebration and mutual respect. During the year staff and students mark important occasions such as Remembrance Day and important events such as Anti-Bullying Week.
School Ethos and Rules – Core and Extended
The school has policy documents on behaviour and praise that are based on mutual respect. WHGS places a special emphasis on charity work with many examples such as the ‘homeless shoebox appeal’ across the school and smaller teams of pupils running individual charity events.
Extra-curricular activities – Extended Curriculum
A wide range of activities outside of the classroom take place at WHGS that encourage the SMSC development of students. Activities outside of the classroom such as school concerts, theatre trips, plus school trips to a range of international locations including the Battlefields deepen opportunities for students to develop their SMSC skills. Author visits, drama and art clubs, and themed weeks such as Activity Week further enhance SMSC development.
Tutor system and PSHE – Core Curriculum
Each student has a form tutor who is responsible for their academic, social and personal welfare. Form periods are delivered daily, and this includes a fortnightly PSHE lesson aimed at developing SMSC skills and understanding of all students.
Student Leadership – Extended Curriculum
Heads of House, Prefects, Student Ambassadors, School Council / Form Representatives, Peer Mentors in Years 10 (to Year 7 pupils) and 12 (to Years 8 and 9 pupils) and Sports Leaders are all examples of opportunities for students to demonstrate leadership and responsibility.
Reward System – Core Curriculum
WHGS has a strong reward system. The school Praise code recognises the achievement of pupils in each and every lesson where they are on time, on task and on side by the award of a teacher stamp. Pupils are rewarded by the William Hulme’s Way Awards which recognises their contributions in and out of the classroom. Pupils also contribute towards the House Championship by partaking in house competitions for Sports, Food and Nutrition, Art, Drama and other subject areas.
WOW Days and Partnerships – Extended Curriculum
WOW learning days, such as raising awareness of LGBT communities, where students engage in a range of cross curricular activities and have the opportunity to listen to the experiences of members of the LGBT community further develop SMSC skills of students. WHGS’s partnerships with Henshaws encourages an awareness of other local events.
Developing British Values
As a school community, William Hulme’s Grammar School is helping its students to develop “British values”. We define “British Values” to be: Democracy; the rule of law; individual liberty; mutual respect for and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs and for those without faith.
- High impact Assemblies to all pupils on shared British Values
- Delivering an assembly programme with core ethical values and beliefs at its heart
- Having a House system that ensures all individuals are recognised and foster a family ethos with students supporting each other through peer mentoring
- A well-structured Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship education programme
- A strong Religious Studies and Ethics programme at every Key Stage, including a rich focus on different cultures and beliefs
- An effective Smart School Council and Pupil Panels enabling students to actively participate in the democratic process
- A broad and balanced curriculum which addresses many of these core values across a range of subject areas
- Having a clearly communicated and consistently applied Behaviour Policy so that students understand what is expected of them and the consequences of both meeting and failing to meet these expectations
- A rewards system that recognises positive contributions in school and celebrates success
- A Code of Conduct “WHGS Respect Charter” which is regularly referred to and communicated with students, reiterating that we are a school community built on mutual respect and understanding
- Employing restorative approaches, where possible, to resolve any difficulties between members of our school community
- Having a rigorous commitment to student safety (for example: trips and visits policy and procedures, Safeguarding procedures, Code of Conduct and Health and Safety procedures)
- Celebration of the diverse nature of our school community through menus, themed events, the Assembly programme, the teaching of World Music and the choice of texts/resources across the curriculum
- An extra-curricular programme that provides opportunities outside the curriculum to develop individual talent and contribute to school life
In addition, the points below relate to how we aim to eliminate the possibility of Radicalisation as many of these actions / steps also assist us in affirming and reinforcing core “British Values” of tolerance, respect and the rule of law. Citizens who feel respected, connected and valued within a community are far less likely to be at risk of radicalisation.
We have defined Radicalisation as, “a process by which an individual or group comes to adopt increasingly extreme political, social, or religious ideals and aspirations that (1) reject or undermine the status quo or (2) reject and / or undermine contemporary ideas and expressions of freedom of choice.” We believe it is when someone feels marginalised or under-valued that there is a greater opportunity for such extremism to be fostered.
We aim to prevent the radicalisation of our students / staff by:
- Celebrating diversity through our curricular and extra-curricular content
- Providing menu options to meet specific dietary requirements such as halal food
- Authorising absence appropriately for religious observance such as Eid celebrations
- Providing opportunities / facilities for personal prayer and reflection such as Friday prayers
- Providing a Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship education programme that celebrates diversity, challenges stereotypes and addresses issues such as discrimination and prejudice in society as a whole
- Having a school uniform which can be adapted appropriately to meet the requirements of religious dress codes such as headscarfs and P.E. kit (tracksuit trousers are available for girls)
- Ensuring that student rewards programmes offer rewards that are appropriate to those of all faiths and none
- Providing Work Experience for all year 10 pupils which offers students the opportunity to explore career aspirations and raise expectations
- Ensuring the safer recruitment of our staff and ensure visitors are appropriately vetted and supervised whilst on site
- Responding rapidly, rigorously and appropriately to any reported incidents of a racist or discriminatory nature, adhering to Local Authority reporting protocols, as required
