This week our Year 12 Law, Politics and Business Studies students had a visit from local MP, Afzal Khan.
The local MP is always happy to come and speak to our Sixth Form students and support development and understanding of Politics.
Students asked lots of questions about the MP’s experience as a lawyer before becoming a politician, the challenges he has faced and some of the best experiences he has had. Students asked some challenging questions about the MP’s views on the Prime Minister and Andy Burnham and the potential leadership challenge.
Afzal Khan, MP, emphasised the importance of democracy, diversity and representation in UK’s political system. He addressed concerns about the growing support for minor parties, the spreading of misinformation and banning of social media.
The MP shared his views about Manchester, saying that it is one of the best places to live. He emphasised the diversity of the city is a key strength, the laid-back attitude of Mancunians and the city’s role in standing up and fighting against injustice.
Students appreciated Afzal Khan’s open and honest responses to their questions. His visit has inspired students to research work experience opportunities within local government.
