Uniform

All students from Nursery to Year 11 are expected to wear school uniform. Students in our Sixth Form are not required to wear uniform, but are expected to dress smartly. Please refer to the relevant tab below for details of the dress code for your child.

Items carrying the school crest should be purchased from Monkhouse.

Second-hand uniform (Secondary Phase) is available to purchase (at low cost) direct from the school.  Please contact the school for details.

Nursery and Reception

WHGS want your child to be as independent as possible so children should be able to dress and undress themselves easily without having to struggle with zips, buttons or shoelaces. Pull up/down skirts and trousers are essential. There should be no sports logos on tracksuit bottoms.

All students must wear the following items of uniform that best fits with the gender they identify with. This will be kept under review.

Uniform List:

  • White polo shirt with or without WHGS logo
  • Black V-neck long sleeve jumper with or without WHGS logo (no sweatshirts)
  • Black trousers or black skirt (must have elasticated waist, no zips or buttons)
  • Black/grey socks or plain black tights
  • Plain black school shoes with velcro fastening (no laces please)
  • Waterproof school coat – any colour
  • Wellington boots (any colour)
  • Optional - Black shorts for summer (must have elasticated waist, no zips or buttons) or blue gingham dress to be worn with white socks or white tights.

PE Kit

  • PE bag
  • Plain white t-shirt (no collar)
  • Navy blue shorts (must have elasticated waist, no zips or buttons)
  • Black pumps (no laces)

NB. All clothing and equipment must be clearly marked with the owner's name.

Primary Phase

PE Kit is ordered through a different supplier (please see separate tab for PE Kit).  All other items of uniform which do not carry the school crest may be purchased from your supplier of choice.

  • Black school trousers (not ‘skinny’ style) or black skirt – must be panel or box pleated
  • Plain black tights or black/grey socks
  • Black shoes, plain, sensible style (Trainers must NOT be worn)
  • Optional - Black V-neck long sleeve jumper with or without WHGS logo (no sweatshirts)
  • Waterproof school coat – any colour
  • Optional - Black shorts for summer or blue gingham dress to be worn with white socks or white tights
  • Bookbag or backpack
  • Headscarves worn for religious reasons should be plain and of dark colour

Swimming Kit

  • Swimming trunks NOT shorts or one-piece costume
  • Swimming Hat (if long hair)
  • Towel

Games and PE Kit

Key Stage 1

  • Plain white t-shirt (no collar)
  • Navy blue shorts (must have elasticated waist. no zips or buttons)
  • Black Pumps (no laces)

Key Stage 2

  • WHGS PE t-shirt - SWi
  • WHGS PE shorts - SWi
  • WHGS PE navy blue socks – SWi
  • WHGS long sleeve training top and pants - SWi
  • Trainers
  • Shin pads

Coats must be plain and preferably of dark colour. Students can wear coats at all times other than in the classrooms.

Additional Expectations

Hair

  • No extreme hair styles are allowed (this includes partially or totally shaved hair) and the school will make the final decision on what is acceptable.

Jewellery

  • One pair of discreet stud earrings in the lower ear.
  • One wrist watch.
  • One plain ring.
  • No facial, tongue or body piercings are allowed, for Health and Safety reasons.

Make Up

  • No nail varnish is allowed.
  • No false/acrylic nails are allowed.
  • Make up should be kept to a minimum.  The school will determine what is acceptable.

In our Code of Practice, which has been signed by every student and their parents/carers, it states the following:

Uniform: School uniform must be worn at all times (this includes the journey to and from school). Students will not be allowed entry into the School building without full uniform, unless they have previously obtained written permission from the Principal (eg. on faith or medical grounds). Chewing gum is not permitted.

Please make sure that when your son/daughter comes to school in September, he/she is wearing the correct full uniform, and they should also have the correct kit for PE/Games. Every student needs to be fully equipped with pens, pencils and a bag suitable for carrying textbooks.

Please note that:

  • Hooded sweatshirts and baseball caps are not allowed
  • Skin tight trousers and jeans are not permitted
  • Headscarves worn by girls for religious reasons must be black or navy blue – coloured or patterned headscarves are not acceptable
  • Hats, scarves and gloves should be of a plain, dark colour and must not be worn during or between lessons in the school buildings
  • Bandanas and do-rags must not be worn
  • ‘Ugg’ style suede boots must not be worn

Students who arrive at school without the correct full uniform will serve a same day detention. In extreme cases, the school reserves the right to take further reasonable action.

PE Kit

This PE Kit applies for all Secondary Phase students. Pupils in the Primary Phase have the option to purchase the same PE kit, but it is not compulsory. See separate tabs for EYFS and Primary requirements.

The WHGS PE Kit includes APTUS garments, which use a combination of lightweight breathable fabrics along with 3D Dimple Mesh panels to create garments that are comfortable and effective to perform in.

The following PE kit items are acceptable as part of the PE Department’s Health and Safety Policy. No other items are allowed to be worn by students. Staff will sanction students who do not arrive with the correct PE kit for their lesson.

Compulsory Clothing Items

  • APTUS navy blue T-shirt with school crest (unisex or girl style option)
  • APTUS Range navy blue shorts
  • APTUS Range navy blue training pants or
  • APTUS Navy Blue WHGS Leggings
  • Navy Sports Socks (Short)
  • Non-marking trainers
  • Football boots (Moulded - Astro and Field use)
  • Football Socks (Long)

NB. Pumps/Plimsolls are not suitable for Sport

Optional Clothing Items

  • Navy blue, quarter-zip training top with school crest from the APTUS range (boys or girls)
  • Long Sleeve Under Armour shirts (underneath PE kit)
  • Long Sleeve Under Armour leggings (underneath PE kit)

Equipment

  • Shin pads (compulsory for football and hockey)
  • Mouth guard (compulsory for rugby, highly recommended for hockey)

The PE Department will bulk buy mouthguards, which will be available for purchase at the discounted price of £2.00.
