Transition from Year 6 to Year 7 at WHGS

At William Hulme’s Grammar School (WHGS), we recognise that moving from Primary to Secondary School can be an exciting but also daunting time for Year 6 pupils. For this reason, we have a robust and thorough transition package that best supports pupils with their transition.

All prospective pupils and parents/carers are invited to look around our school at our Open Evening in the Autumn term.  If offered a place in Year 7 at WHGS, then parents and carers will be invited in for an Introductory Evening at the end of March, with the opportunity to meet key staff and have a tour of the school site.  Following this, Year 6 pupils and their parents/carers are invited to a personalised transition interview at the start of the summer term, where they will meet a key member of staff. This interview enables us to start getting to know pupils well and helps pupils to feel more comfortable about starting in Year 7.

A variety of transition events follow. Our own Year 6 pupils take part in a 3 week transition project, where they experience Secondary Phase lessons in Maths, English, Science, Languages and the Arts. All Year 6 pupils are invited in for an Induction Day where they meet their form tutors, get to know the other pupils in their class and sample lessons. There are also additional events for more vulnerable Year 6 pupils and those that are the only one coming from their primary school.

In the Autumn term after our new Year 7 pupils have started, we run a peer mentoring programme where Year 10 pupils mentor selected Year 7s to help them settle in. We also invite parents and carers in towards the end of the Autumn term to discuss how their children have settled in.

We hope that you find the transition resources on our website useful. Please do not hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions!
