Sixth Form Bar Mock Trial 2025

WHGS Students Shine at the Young Citizen’s Bar Mock Trial Competition!

Our Sixth Form students have been preparing for the Young Citizen’s Bar Mock Trial competition since the beginning of this academic year. Every Monday after school, they met to prepare their cases, develop their questioning techniques, and practise giving evidence as witnesses. Students also attended additional after-school sessions to further refine their skills and receive guidance from members of the legal profession.

We were extremely privileged to be supported by Judge Leona Harrison and Barrister Rachel Coyle, who provided invaluable advice on structuring arguments, questioning witnesses, and improving opening and closing statements. Students taking on the role of Barristers showed great dedication to developing their advocacy skills and made excellent use of the feedback provided by our legal experts. All participating students worked exceptionally hard to prepare for their roles, collaborating closely and supporting one another throughout.

On Saturday 15 November 2025, our Sixth Form students took part in the Bar Mock Trial at Manchester Crown Court—a remarkable opportunity to present their cases in real criminal courtrooms and compete against Sixth Forms from across the North West.

Round 1 – Prosecution

Prosecution Barristers Rolina and Faaiz opened the competition with strong advocacy, confidently questioning and cross-examining witnesses. The Judge praised both students for their confidence and excellent oracy skills. Arin and Zara, who appeared as prosecution witnesses, responded clearly and decisively to every question, performing brilliantly under cross-examination.

Round 2 – Defence

Defence Barristers Zeeshan and Alina delivered an impressive case, demonstrating skill and composure throughout their questioning. Ismael, playing the defendant, gave a standout performance - responding to challenging cross-examination with confidence. Sara, the second defence witness, answered questions assertively. Both witnesses played a vital role in helping the team secure a win in this round.

Round 3 – Defence

Defence Barristers Nael and Aisha were exceptional in the third round, thoroughly questioning and cross-examining witnesses to highlight the strengths of their case. Their opening and closing statements were particularly powerful and left a lasting impression. Yoser, appearing as the defendant, handled cross-examination with great assurance, while Nimra, the second defence witness, delivered a standout performance, demonstrating a deep understanding of her statement and responding confidently to every question.

Court Officials - often the unsung heroes of the courtroom are the Court Clerk and the Usher - roles crucial to maintaining order and ensuring proceedings run smoothly. Ciannah and Rahima served as Ushers in Rounds 2 and 3, delivering clear and confident performances. They took charge of the courtroom by giving instructions, swearing in witnesses and the jury, and reading statements. Rafi, who acted as Court Clerk in Round 1, overcame a nervous start to fulfil his role successfully.

All students also participated as jurors for other schools, listening carefully to the evidence presented and reaching fair verdicts in each case. They later took part in a Q&A session with the Judges and Barristers supporting the event, gaining further insight into legal careers and courtroom practice.

Every student thoroughly enjoyed the day and excelled in the competition. Miss Ingham and Mr Wong are incredibly proud of the professionalism, confidence, and commitment shown by all WHGS students at Manchester Crown Court. They were outstanding representatives of the WHGS community and the Sixth Form.

Well done to every student involved!
