PE and Sport Premium
William Hulme’s Grammar School Primary Physical Education and Sport Premium Allocation
WHGS share the Department for Education vision for the Primary PE and Sport Premium, “that all pupils leave primary school physically literate and with the knowledge, skills and motivation necessary to equip them for a healthy, active lifestyle and lifelong participation in physical activity and sport”. This also links into United Learnings PE values of Fit to Lead, Fit for Life and Fit to Perform, which are core in KS3 upwards.
In 2022-2023, the amount of grant received by WHGS for the Primary PE and Sport Premium is £19,600.
All classes from Year 1 to Year 6 have two hours of physical education over the course of the week. During these lessons, our Sports Coach makes a valuable contribution to the quality and range of PE and sport delivered in school. The Sports Coach upskills the teachers by working alongside them in the delivery of lessons alongside the implementation of the Primary PE Passport as a scheme of work to help support this process. A range of sports and skills are taught. These include traditional activities, such as athletics, dance, gymnastics, invasion games, striking and fielding and net and wall games. These are supplemented with new and developing activities within these areas, such as American Football, Roundnet, Softball and Tennikoit. Our Sports Coach contributes to raising the achievement agenda in school by developing the confidence and self-esteem in children through sport, whilst educating them on the importance and value that sport has. Developing a child's enjoyment of physical activity and sport at a young age is key to promoting lifelong participation, our Sports Coach is passionate about physical activity and sport and provides the children with a positive role model, motivating them to have more involvement within various activities linked to PE and sport.
Competition is developed through working with the Manchester PE Association. They run events citywide to enable pupils to participate in all sports at Excel, Inspire or Inclusion levels against other schools, which are in line with the School Games Values of Passion, Self-Belief, Respect, Honesty, Determination and Teamwork. This is something which provides pupils with a valuable learning experience, and which is enhanced further within the school through our school house system and 'competition week' within their PE lessons.
We also use the Sport Premium Fund to support our pupils in developing a knowledge and understanding of swimming in line with the National Curriculum. Year 5 attend weekly swim sessions with a qualified swimming teacher with the aim to make children safe around water as they grow up.
The PE curriculum in the Primary Phase is underpinned by the excellent extra-curricular programme, which takes place during lunch times and after school. We provide opportunities for pupils to take part in a variety of age-appropriate activities around the school day to help reinforce the work they have started within their PE lessons. This is supported through the Sport Leaders 'PlayMaker Award', which allows our pupils to lead playground activities to engage children at break and lunch times while introducing them to practical leadership roles. The clubs are led by trained staff to support the children to continue their learning in areas of interest. These sessions are subject to change on a termly basis, according to the children's interests and time of year.
