PE and Games

 

We offer a huge range of sporting activities to all students, and every student has two hours of PE per week, during which they participate in a variety of activities. 

To allow us to achieve the greatest level of student progress, we expect all students to arrive with full and correct kit to every PE lesson. If a student has a medical condition or injury and cannot fully participate a note from home but be provided. If the condition is long term you may be asked for a medical note from your GP. Students who cannot participate physically will still be encouraged to support the lesson and remain involved as much as possible through other roles such as a coach and refereeing.

There are many lunchtime and after-school clubs available, to suit all sporting tastes - see the extracurricular programme. For the most up-to-date information, students can check the PE noticeboard near the PE staffroom or listen for updates in Morning Notices.

The PE Faculty provides a broad and balanced programme of activities that the students find challenging, enjoyable and satisfying. Students of all abilities are encouraged to become fully involved and given the opportunity to develop, physically, socially, emotionally and cognitively.

The National Curriculum requirements are met at Key Stage 3 and 4. At Key Stage 3 there are four areas of activity followed, Games, Gymnastics, Leadership, Rounders and Athletics. 

The PE Faculty has maintained good links with local sports clubs and has visiting coaches from them to enhance the PE curriculum. Coaches from Manchester City Football Club, Sale Sharks Rugby Club and Manchester Magic come in to work with the students.

Four units of work are to be completed, three of which are internally assess and one unit is externally assessed.

Progression Pathways

We offer a range of pathways to take you from KS3 through to KS4 and KS5. PE is a subject that opens doors to a number of careers and life options. Sport, nutrition and health and huge topics of discussion in the world today, and as the fight against obesity and sedentary lifestyle issues continues, the knowledge you gain from a course such as this will only grow in importance and relevance.

Currently every Thursday during period 5 students are allocated one hour to complete a sporting opportunity of their preference. During this time we currently hold house competitions in sports such as:

  • Mixed Basketball
  • Mixed Handball
  • Mixed Dodgeball
  • Mixed Softball
  • Mixed Athletics

Level 3 Qualification in Sports Leadership (SL3)

Learners must complete a minimum of 30 hours of leadership throughout this qualification. This will be undertaken in Unit 4 (mandatory unit) and Units 5, 6 and 7 (choose two from these three optional units). The guidance below outlines the suitability of participants within Unit 4 and Unit 7:

  • Year Group 11-13 
  • Unit 4 – Plan, lead and evaluate sport/physical activity sessions for children – the definition of ‘children’ is 4-11 year olds. 
  • Unit 7 – Plan, lead and evaluate sport/physical activity sessions for older people – the definition of ‘older people’ is 50+. 
  • Counts towards 16 UCAS Points

The Student Sports Council is made up of two or more sports enthusiasts from each year group who meet once a term to discuss PE and sport-related issues, and ensure that students have their say in the organisation of activities. 

Council members also help out at sporting events, put together a termly newsletter for each house and prepare a review of the year for the PE notice boards.

Our newly formed Rugby Sports Leaders attended a leadership day at Leeds Metropolitan University to learn about becoming young leaders.

This Girl Can with X-Elle

Girls Active supports WHGS to understand what motivates girls to take part in physical activity. It enables us as teachers to work with the girls – through consultation and leadership – to make the necessary changes to our physical education (PE), sport and physical activity provision. The Chief Medical Officers (CMO) recommend that all children and young people should engage in moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity for at least 60 minutes and up to several hours every day. Research shows that:

  • by age 7 girls are already less active than boys and this disparity widens as they move from childhood into adolescence.
  • secondary-age girls are more likely to experience barriers to participation than boys.
  • the biggest drop-off occurs during the transition from primary to secondary school, with disruption to friendship groups and declining body confidence affecting girls’ participation in PE and sport.

We developed Girls Active in conjunction with Sport England and the Youth Sports Trust as a way of tackling the negative attitudes that girls have towards their body image, and to hopefully improve their attitude towards PE, sport and physical activity. In 2017-2018 school year we managed to work with a whole host of National Governing Bodies and clubs that came in to deliver sport and physical activity.
