WellComm

Introducing the WellComm Toolkit

Developing strong speech, language and communication skills is essential for every child. These early skills support learning, emotional wellbeing, behaviour and long term life chances. At William Hulme’s Grammar School, we are committed to nurturing these foundations from the very start.

Our Approach to Communication and Language

From the earliest years, children benefit from rich, high quality “talking environments”. To support this, we use the WellComm Screening Toolkit, which helps us track each child’s communication development and provide tailored activities where needed.

Screening takes place termly in Nursery and Reception. The process is:

  • Play based
  • Completed by a familiar adult
  • Only a few minutes per child

WellComm uses a simple traffic light system to help us understand each child’s needs:

🟢 Green- No additional support needed – your child is developing communication skills at an age appropriate level.
🟠 Amber-Some gaps identified – your child may benefit from short term, targeted activities.
🔴 Red-Significant gaps identified – additional support is required. If progress is limited after intervention, a referral to Speech and Language Therapy may be considered.

If your child receives an amber or red score, they will take part in focused activities at school and may be given simple tasks to complete at home. A follow up screening takes place three months later to check progress.

  • If progress is good → intervention may continue or stop if your child is now green.
  • If progress is limited → your child’s teacher will discuss next steps, which may include a referral.
  • Follow up screening process
