Y12 Art Trip to Salford Quays

Our Year 12 Art Class went on an Art Trip to Salford Quays to gather primary source photographs and observational drawings.  We plan to use all images gathered in the next unit of "Urban landscape and Portraiture".  

Y12 US Civil Rights Workshop

On Friday 20 January, eight of our Year 12 History Students visited the University of Manchester to take part in a workshop on US Civil Rights.

Y10 Coaching Rewards Trip

This term, sixteen Year 10 students have been coached by a member of staff to help them improve an area of school life. The students and their coaches were split into two teams, to add some healthy competition, and over the course of the 7-week coaching intervention they have been trying to get the fewest detention and Reflection Room referrals.

WHGS Winter Showcase

On Tuesday 13 December, the Music Department hosted a wonderful concert in the Great Hall to a very supportive audience of parents, students, friends and staff. The evening began with the fabulous All-Stars Cuban Band with a rendition of 'She's Royal' and 'Your Love Keeps Lifting Me Higher' and continued with fantastic soloists (Eden, Fatima, Edlyn, Chandan and Yousef), Grace Notes Choir singing 'Santa Claus is Coming To Town', Year 7 and Senior Steel Bands, Year 10 and Year 11 Bands, Ukulele and Co. to name a few! 

Y11 Trip to Lyme Park

On Wednesday 14 December, a group of twelve Year 11 students visited Lyme Park in Stockport. Having visited the Park when they were in Year 7, the students were very keen to recreate their fun day out and experience Lyme Park in the winter... and they were not disappointed!

Year 9 Sale Harriers Athletics Competition

On Friday 9 December, a group of our Year 9 students took part in a Sale Harriers Athletics Competition at Sports City. They competed against 21 schools from the North West in a range of different events. All performers were exceptional and showed determination and courage within their events.

Henshaws Visit

On Tuesday 6 December, we welcomed our friends from Henshaws who were serenaded by KS3 Grace Notes Choir, a Year 11 soloist, and Ukes and Company.

Clean Air Workshop

Students in our Drama Club were given an amazing opportunity to be involved in a Clean Air Workshop run by 'Let's Talk Clean Air'.

KS4 Inter-House Masterchef Competition

On Tuesday this week, the Food & Nutrition Department held the KS4 Inter-House Masterchef Competition. The standard was very high with students making a great mix of highly skilled, tasty, savoury and sweet dishes.  

Christmas Jumper Day

Thursday 9 December, was Christmas Jumper Day. Staff and students wore Christmas and festive jumpers to raise funds for the charity, Hug in a Blanket. We managed to raise £150 on the day; enough for 18 blankets! Hug in a Blanket is a very small charity made up of volunteers so they will be absolutely delighted with the donations and we will have put a big smile on 18 very special children’s faces.

Y8/Y9 Manchester Healthy School's Virtual Voicebox Event

On Wednesday 7 December, our Smart School Council Communication Team took part in Manchester Healthy School's virtual Voicebox event, where Student Councils from schools around Manchester met to discuss topical issues and plan for how our schools can address them.

Y10 French Study Session

Twenty of our Year 10 French GCSE students attended a French study session at Home Cinema in Manchester on Tuesday 6 December.  The session was led by IsabelleVanderschelden, a Manchester Metropolitan University Lecturer in French and Film Studies.

WHGS Geography Club Competes in Manchester GA's 'Worldwise Quiz'

On Thursday 1 December, WHGS’s Year 8 Geography Club members; Dinah, Niki, Shania, Meerab and Anayah, competed against other Year 8, 9, 10 and 11 geographers from around Greater Manchester and Cheshire at the Manchester Branch of the Geographical Association’s ‘Worldwise Quiz’. 

Y13 Geography Fieldtrip

During the week commencing 14 November, our Year 13 Geographers went on their residential fieldtrip to Betws-y-Coed in Snowdonia. They spent the week looking at fieldwork techniques in a huge range of environments; from looking at carbon sequestration in woodlands, to infiltration rates in different areas, even looking at how perception of place can change in Llandudno, and investigating the incredible post-glacial scenery in the Nant Ffrancon and Ogdon valleys.

Tree Planting by the Garden Club

WHGS Garden Club, which is run by our Art Teacher, Ms Dawson, applied to the Woodland Trust for 420 sapling trees to plant along the fenceline on the playing field to hide the traffic and soak up some of the CO2 from the traffic passing on the Princess Parkway.  

It took us three weeks to plant all the trees and we did it in rain, wind, the cold and one glorious sunny Autumn day!  Over forty children took part, supported by six members of staff from across all parts of the school; Primary to Sixth Form.
