Y13 Geography Fieldtrip

During the week commencing 14 November, our Year 13 Geographers went on their residential fieldtrip to Betws-y-Coed in Snowdonia. They spent the week looking at fieldwork techniques in a huge range of environments; from looking at carbon sequestration in woodlands, to infiltration rates in different areas, even looking at how perception of place can change in Llandudno, and investigating the incredible post-glacial scenery in the Nant Ffrancon and Ogdon valleys.

Tree Planting by the Garden Club

WHGS Garden Club, which is run by our Art Teacher, Ms Dawson, applied to the Woodland Trust for 420 sapling trees to plant along the fenceline on the playing field to hide the traffic and soak up some of the CO2 from the traffic passing on the Princess Parkway.

It took us three weeks to plant all the trees and we did it in rain, wind, the cold and one glorious sunny Autumn day!  Over forty children took part, supported by six members of staff from across all parts of the school; Primary to Sixth Form.

Children In Need Culture Day

Despite the cold and the rain, the school once again had a really good Culture Day on Friday 18 November, raising money for Children in Need.

Lots of students arrived to school in traditional dress and proudly carried their home nation flags. During the morning break, a cake sale was held. At lunchtime, a World Cup Scavenger Hunt was held, where students had to find the flags of the thirteen countries that our school represent in this year's Football World Cup.

New Age Kurling Success for Year 7 and Year 8 Students

On Thursday 17 November, the school took part in the Manchester PE Association SLD New Age Kurling Competition. New Age Kurling is sports hall kurling, where the stones have wheels. The school entered two teams into the competition; a Year 7 and a Year 8 Team. Both teams were fantastic and represented the school brilliantly.

Disco Classical at the Bridgewater Hall

On Friday 18 November, a group of our music students attended a fantastic gig, 'Disco Classical' at the Bridgewater Hall. Students were entertained by support act De Tronic and then the main act, complete with orchestra, band and singers.

The concert was made all the better for featuring our very own drum and percussion teacher, Lea Mullen who played in both groups. Students and staff danced all night and the lighting, glow sticks, ticker tape and fantastic music made for a really wonderful occasion.

Y10 Peer Coaching Programme

This term, we have launched our Peer Coaching Programme. Ten Year 10 students have been trained up in Coaching for Kids and are coaching our Year 7 students.

The sessions start with shared lunch together and then a formal coaching session in the Library. Year 10 coaches and their Year 7 coachees have all been really engaged and are making the most of the programme.

Diwali Cooking Club

To celebrate Diwali, the Food & Nutrition Department ran a Cooking Club. Students were given the chance to experience Diwali celebration dishes, chickpea curry and parathas.

All the students contributed in preparing these delicious dishes, which they all then enjoyed together at the end of the session.

Remembrance Day 2022

In memory of the 177 members of the school community who lost their lives in World War I and II, students designed bunting flags.

The flags were displayed in the Forum on Friday 11 November, whilst the school observed a two minute silence and Mrs Goodier played the Last Post, in remembrance of the armed forces who have died in the line of duty.

Year 8 Masterchef Competition

On Tuesday 8 November, the Food & Nutrition Department held the first interhouse Masterchef Competition of the year.  Students made a great mix of tasty savoury and sweet dishes.

Black History Month
