Students and staff at William Hulme’s Grammar School (WHGS) in Manchester are celebrating again today as GCSE results are released across the country.
This year at WHGS, over three quarters of Year 11s (77%) achieved grade 4 or higher in both English and maths, with over half the year group (55%) achieving a grade 5 or above in the two subjects. In English alone, an impressive 84% of students achieved a grade 4 or above, with 83% achieving the same in maths.
In addition to the overall measures, there were some particularly impressive individual performances:
- Attifa, who achieved nine grade 9s and one grade 8;
- Gregory, who achieved seven grade 9s, one grade 8 and two grade 7s;
- Chethan, who achieved six grade 9s, three grade 8s and two grade 7s;
- Shruti, who achieved six grade 9s, one grade 8, two grade 7s, one grade 6 and a Distinction* in Music Technology;
- Mohammed, who achieved five grade 9s, three grade 8s and two grade 7s;
- Hana, who achieved five grade 9s, one grade 8, two grade 7s and three grade 6s;
- Maysa, who achieved four grade 9s, four grade 8s and two grade 7s;
- Nyesha, who achieved four grade 9s, five grade 8s and two grade 7s;
Today’s GCSE performances mirror the success of WHGS’s Sixth Form last week, when students’ results enabled them to secure their next steps at top destinations of their choice. Many Year 11s are now excited to be following in their footsteps by staying at WHGS to continue their education.
Chethan, a student who collected his results today, said:
“Thank you all so much for the great support and to the teachers who helped me so much throughout the GCSE period. I couldn’t have asked for better teachers than those at William Hulme's. I’m coming to William Hulme’s Sixth Form and I’m looking forward to the A-Level experience in general, learning new content and just getting to know everyone – new people to be around. It’s going to be a great time.”
This summer’s bumper results success has been a fantastic way to wrap up an academic year in which the school received highly positive feedback in its most recent Ofsted inspection. In the inspectors’ report, Ofsted pointed to the high expectations and ambitious curriculum that is embedded across all phases of the school.
Congratulating students on their achievements, Thom Copestake, Head of School at WHGS, said:
"This year’s Year 11s began their secondary school journey amid the challenges of the pandemic and have had to demonstrate incredible resilience and determination throughout the course of their studies. These results are therefore not only well earned but a reflection of their spirit, effort and perseverance. We couldn’t be prouder of what they’ve achieved."
Kate Heaton, Principal, added:
"These students’ achievements are a reflection of their dedication and lay important foundations for their future success. They are also testament to the unwavering support from our excellent staff team, whose guidance and encouragement have helped make these results possible.
“As we look ahead, our team is excited to welcome many of these Year 11 students into our thriving Sixth Form to continue to develop as exceptional young people and receive a rich educational experience."
