On Friday 9 February, we hosted our "WOMArathoN" Challenge. We were celebrating the 40th anniversary of the formation of Women in Sport and 40 years since women were first allowed to run the marathon in the Olympics. Women in Sport was founded in 1984 and has a track record of success in securing change, based on its deep understanding of the needs and aspirations of women and girls at each life stage. Its goal is to break down gender inequalities and ensure that all sport is transformed for the benefit of every woman and girl in the UK.

Sixty Year 7 and 8 girls signed up to complete the race. As a team, they all worked co-operatively to finish the marathon distance. All students managed to run/wheel/skip 1km individually, taking us over our 40km total. Taking part in this event formed a personal challenge for all of our students but, during the event, it was fantastic to see the resilience and character shown. Each student earned House points for their teams, for their attitude and effort while taking part.

After the distance was completed, we spoke about the importance of physical activity and sport. All students spoke about the effects that sport and physical activity had on their lives within the school day.

Students commented:

  • I feel better socially as I get to be with my friends
  • It makes me feel better and improves my health as I do a lot of it
  • Enhanced mood and it's just fun
  • I get enjoyment from being outside and not being stuck in a classroom

Congratulations to all the girls that took part in the Challenge for their achievements.
